HONORS:
Selected by the Medical College of Ohio to be their Distinguished Lecturer for the year 2000. They sponsor a Distinguished Lecturer Series yearly. The lecture was on: Components of Agreement in Personal and Bioethical Decision Making. It was held on March 23,2000.
Granted the title of School of Nursing Distinguished Professor.
Awarded in perpetuity on March, 24, 1998.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES:
1997-1998 In the process of testing Husteds' Bioethical Decision Making Theory of Symphonology.
First phase (qualitative design) is completed. An article is forthcoming.

Second phase was to develop a quantitative tool from the information gained from the prior qualitative study. Tool is completed and pilot testing began in Oct. 1999. Final phase will test the theory of Symphonology using the tool as well as interviews to collect qualitative data.

1997-1998 Principal investigator on a research project to test a brochure, developed in a prior research study, on advance directives that was designed specifically to meet the needs of well elderly people. An article was published in the Journal of Gerontological Nursing.
1997-1998 Principal investigator on a Sigma Theta Tau International grant submitted February 22, 1996. The aim of the study was to develop a brochure on advance directives that would meet the needs of well elderly people and to pilot test this brochure. The research was not funded but the research was completed and an article has been published in the Journal of Gerontological Nursing.
1997-1998 Principal investigator: Case Studies Involving Bioethical Dilemmas: Do Nurses Choose the Same Option for Themselves as they Choose for Their Patients (given $250 for starter funds from Sigma Theta Tau International, Epsilon Phi Chapter).

The tool "Case Studies Involving Bioethical Dilemmas: Do Nurses Choose the Same Options for Themselves as They Choose for Their Patients?" was designed by Gladys L. Husted in consultation with two experts in tool development, an expert in research, and a statistician. Faculty and 18 staff nurses consented to pilot test the tool and to make comments regarding revisions. Changes were made accordingly before data collection began. Paper presented in Jamaica at a Sigma Theta Tau International Research conference, June 2, 1996.


1997-1998 Acted as a consultant for two staff nurses at Allegheny General Hospital who are using the tool "Knowledge of Nurses Regarding the Patient Self-Determination Act and Advanced Directives" to study staff on their unit. Data collection, analysis, and dissemination of information has been completed.
1997-1998 Questionnaire:"Knowledge of Nurses Regarding the Patient self-determination Act and Advanced Directives" developed along with a graduate student, Vanessa Plisko. The tool has been copyrighted and was used for Vanessa's thesis. There have been three request to use the tool by other researchers.
1997-1998 Served as chair (15) and committee member (12) for Master's Theses.
1997-1998 Chair of eight dissertation committees (One person who has graduated used the theory of Symphonology and applied it to advance directives). Member of two outside committees - one at Penn State (Using the theory or Symphonology and applying it to continuing education) and one at IUP in the discipline of criminology.

  1. Contacted by the University College of the Cariboo in Kamloops, B.C., Canada to review a research proposal in bioethics regarding its scholarly merits for the UCC Research Funds Committee. Following my review the faculty member received the grant monies (1997).
  2. Periodically contacted by Deans or Directors of Schools of Nursing to do a review of an applicant's scholarly work for promotion and/or tenure.
  3. Contacted by Master's Students from the University of New Zealand to help them develop a plan for starting a Nursing Ethics Committee. Through e-mail have been able to assist them with this (1998/99).
  4. Contacted by a doctoral student at Val In Georgia to help validate her tool dealing with curriculum revision and bioethics (1999).
